Mr. Joe Ganley was inducted posthumously into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in 1978. As we continue to investigate his soccer playing career, we would like to thank his daughter Sister Teresa Joseph Ganley C.PP.S. for the accompanying articles about Mr. Ganley. Like many athletes in the early years of soccer in St. Louis there were a number that found baseball as their game of choice. Even though they were soccer players, they were also very good baseball players. As these articles from 1922 will attest, Joe Ganley was a leader in the hitting and stealing bases categories.
We feel bad that the articles will not enlarge so you could read the comments, but the records speak for themselves.
As a coach and mentor at St. Gabriel in South St. Louis, Mr. Ganley was called upon to speak at a soccer banquet to give inspiration to players and talk about his Soccer career.
The only real reference we have been able to show Mr. Ganley played soccer was this picture of him on crutches after a break of his leg in a soccer game at Carondelet Park. He is holding his baseball glove.
