A brief history of Bill “Doggie” Schuler: from the genealogical findings of Lynne Barna. Lynne’s father was first cousin to Doggie
One of the first things that I ran into was his “official” name, specifically, his middle name. I believe his complete name was William Earl Schuler because that is the name he used on his Draft card and his marriage license. It seems he was born on 9 March 1916 and died on 7 August 1964. In about 1940 at age 24 years, he was a new worker as a boiler maker. Soon after, as you know, he was drafted into the military during WWII. After the war, he went back to this occupation sometimes at Nooter Boiler Company. His obituary states that he was a member of the International Brotherhood of Boiler Makers, Local No. 27, and was buried at Calvary Cemetery and Mausoleum, St. Louis, MO.
His family lived in the German enclave in St. Louis City in various places such as Ashland Ave. near the Fairgrounds. His parents eventually resided in Florissant. Although his obituary states that he was never married, I have found a marriage record for him marrying Betty Jo Smith on 28 March 1954 in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO, when he was 38 years old. This is EXTREMELY odd, because Betty Jo’s obituary also says she was never married. Betty Jo died just 4 years after they were married in 1958, and her death certificate only complicates an already odd situation. She was apparently an invalid who suffered with a club foot and other health problems. Betty’s father was a farmer, and she came from a family of 8 children. I can only think that perhaps these two people kept their marriage a secret from everyone in their family.
Brief history of Bill “Doggie” Schuler
Doggie was not the most healthy person either, according to his death certificate, because he died rather unepectedly and suddenly after being taken to the City Hospital in St. Louis at age 48. I will try to send you some of these documents. I am sorry that this is about all I can offer you at this time unless you want to know more about his parents and grandparents. The short history is that they were German immigrants, arriving in 1873 and 1875 from Westphalia, North Rhine Germany, and Freiburg, Baden, Wurttemberg, Prussia. They all lived in the German area around the St. Augustine Church to begin with and dispersed from there.
