1989 Bud Light

1990 Whit Star

1989 Bud Light and 1990 White Star Women’s Over 30 National Champions

In 1980, St. Louis was represented at the National Over 30  tournament by women whose only soccer experience was from playing indoor soccer at the Soccer Dome.  Almost a decade later, the Bud Light and White Star Women’s Over 30 team would celebrate the only Back to Back Women’s National Championship in Philadelphia and Houston.  The majority of these women had never played soccer in High School or College and only began playing club soccer in their twenties.  The players on this team had full time jobs and many were mothers whose kids were sometimes seen at practice.

National and St. Louis Soccer Hall of Famer Bob Kehoe led the team through the eighties.  Thom Champion and Hall of Famer John Schneider led the team to their National Championships,

This team was in a “League of their Own”.  This was an amazing accomplishment for women with full time jobs, kids, and relatively new to soccer.

This award was created in 2012 by the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame Executive Board to honor Msgr. Louis Meyer.  It will be given to a team for its notable and/or memorable accomplishments.  There may be only a few individual hall of famers on a given team, yet the team as a whole is a Hall of Fame Team.  This award will be given so that the team will experience being recognized by the St. Louis Soccer Hall for their accomplishments

Msgr. Louis Meyer was a person who taught and participated in teamwork all of his life.  In 1947 he was selected to be the Assistant Director of the C.Y.C.   For the next 37 years the team included Father Lloyd Sullivan, Bob Guelker, and Joe Carenza Sr. and a dedicated staff that moved the work of the C.Y.C. forward.  The team was responsible for bringing international soccer teams to St. Louis in the 50’s and 60’s to compete against the C.Y.C. All-Stars in some of the most memorable games in St. Louis soccer history.

Most important is that Msgr. Meyer became the Executive Director of the C.Y.C in 1960 when Msgr. Sullivan retired, and in the following years the organization grew and allowed young boys and girls a place to play any sport that could be played.  Never turning any child away for race, creed, or color.
